About the Leitha Muriel Browne Conference Centre
The Leitha Muriel Browne Conference Centre was established at the request of Ms. Browne’s daughters, Amryll Strachan and Margareta Phillips, to promote and encourage fundraising and donation initiatives exclusively for St. Dominic’s Children’s Home.
Leitha was born in St. Vincent on February 24, 1929 and grew up in Belmont, Trinidad and Tobago, the ancestral home of her father, Cyril Alan Browne’s family. As a child she developed close ties with the Belmont Orphanage (SDCH), where some of her close friends resided. Leitha, a woman who embodied compassion, empathy, and generosity, passed away at the age of 94 on September 17, 2023, in St. Catharines, ON, Canada.

Leitha Muriel Browne, a woman of the Caribbean, was born in St. Vincent, the youngest daughter of Gertrude Babb Browne and renowned Barbados/West Indies cricketer, Chester Allan Browne.
Leitha lived in Belmont, Trinidad, until the age of fifty-five, when she emigrated to join family in Canada. She attended St. Francis Girls School and was later employed as a women’s hat designer and supervisor for a Belmont headgear manufacturer. In Canada, she worked as a PSW (Personal Support Worker) and in LTC (Long Term Care), until retirement at the age of sixty-five.
After retirement, Leitha volunteered at the LTC Home she had been employed by. She was awarded a number of recognitions for her dedication to caring for the elderly. In addition to her working career, Leitha was a church choir soloist and gospel singer.Leitha passed away peacefully in St. Catharines, with family at her side.
No one is truly gone until the ripples they create in the world fade away. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.
SDCH would like to thank the members of the Browne Family, both in Trinidad and Canada, who inspired the naming of the Leitha Muriel Browne Conference Centre. We would also like to thank their consultant, Mr. Wil De Clercq, for facilitating the Naming Agreement.
