Shalom Center
Commonly understood as the Hebrew word for peace, SHALOM means much more than just the absence of war. It means ‘be complete’; fullness, balance, harmony. When we use Shalom as a greeting, we are actually speaking a mighty blessing over the person(s) being greeted.
The SDCH Shalom Center is a youth-friendly space on the Belmont campus of St. Dominic’s Children’s Home. It was founded in 2010 in response to an invitation issued to NGOs by the government, through its Citizen Security Programme (CSP), to become partners in curbing youth violence. (The CSP is a primary violence prevention programme initiated by the Ministry of National Security.

Support Services
The Shalom Centre works in collaboration with the Veritas Child and Family Life Development Center (The Veritas Center) to provide in-house behavioural wellness services. Thus young persons have ready access to professional counselling and support services.
At the Veritas Center young people and adults are given the guidance they need to identify, celebrate and develop their strengths and personal resources that sustain them. They are also engaged to assess and address the ‘triggers’ and risk factors that fuel the problematic behaviour, through a ‘tool-kit’ of biopsychosocial-spiritual interventions. The Shalom Center also collaborates with the St. Dominic’s Trade School.
